The project “Fishing School for Refugees” run by Integrations-portalen.dk and the EAA Danish member society Danmarks Sportsfiskerforbund started again this May. The project aims to teach young people, especially refugee children, to fish and to facilitate access to nature. Thanks to this project young people with different cultural backgrounds can get together while discovering a healthy outdoor experience and enter in contact with the vibrant Danish angler’s community.
Due to start on the 16th of March, this year fishing school had to be postponed because of the COVID-19 outbreak. The relaxation of lockdown measures in Denmark made it possible to launch this year’s edition now, provided that strict measures of physical distancing and good hygiene are respected.
Accessing a new hobby and nature
The first edition of the project took place in 2019 and was a great success. Indeed, many young participants became members of the junior section of the Danish angling association and the organisers hope for the same outcome this year.
The school began on the 11th of May with an evening trip to the Horsens harbour to fish for herring. The fishing school will run during the summer and the fall. Participants will try different fishing waters and learn various fishing techniques. The organisers provide children with gears and will offer a tackle package at the end of the project.
The project is supported by the Outdoor Council which granted DKK 900,000. It also receives co-financing from LAG Odder-Hedensted and Rural Resources granted by the Danish Commerce Agency.
