On 20 November 2021, the EAA General Assembly adopted its resolution on aquaculture, calling on the EU, EU member states and other European wild salmon producing nations to strengthen the legislative framework surrounding the salmon farming sector.

The EAA recognises that the past legislation aimed at preventing the decline of wild salmonids has been unsuccessful and that further action is needed to tackle the two main problems wild salmon is facing: sea lice and escaped farmed salmon.

The Association is calling on the European decision-makers to allow only the construction of new fish farms, or the extension of existing ones, in closed systems. The association also demands that all fish farms adopt closed systems by 2030.
