The European Anglers Alliance Dutch member, Sportvisserij Nederland, has announced its decision to further support the grassroots initiative "Revitaliseren in de natuur" (Revitalize in Nature). An initiative dedicated to aid the re-introduction and recovery of individuals suffering from severe mental health issues and PTSD

Angling added as on the main activities of the "Revitaliseren in natuur" mental health project for high-risk professionals

High-risk professions like police officers, firefighters, and emergency responders face daily challenges that significantly affect their physical and mental well-being. The program "Revitaliseren in natuur," developed by the organisation ‘Stichting Politieveteraan’*, is designed to provide support for police officers experiencing mental health challenges. In many cases, police officers find it difficult to navigate existing reintegration processes effectively.

In 2024, the project's program has been expanded to include angling as it offers the chance to experience nature and the challenge of catching fish. Additionally, angling is a social activity that brings together individuals with an interest in nature above and below the water surface.

With the angling program, first responders with more complex PTSD trauma’s can be helped in an outdoor and reduced stimuli setting. The group setting among fellow sufferers also enhances the chances of a successful therapy, writes Sportvisserij Nederland.

Sportvisserij Nederland decided to support this initiative further

As angling is both a physically and mentally healthy activity and can contribute to the recovery of people with PTSD-like complaints, EAA member Sportvisserij Nederland decided to support further the Politieveteraan foundation. This with lending the necessary material to the foundation to execute the angling activities and even a cheque worth 2.000EUR.

Sportvisserij Nederland’s financial support can be seen as a major message by the Dutch angling community that angling should be considered further as a mental health recovery therapy activity.

Outdoor activities - as angling - has proved to be a very effective way of mental health therapy

Engaging in outdoor activities, such as angling, offers numerous health benefits that even extend beyond physical well-being. This through the tranquillity and relaxation that angling provides.

According to research by the University of Essex (UK) engaging in physical activity in a green environment significantly boosts self-esteem, reduces stress, and enhances overall mood. This positive effect is further amplified when water features are present within the green environment.
